A series of courses for adults who wish to
develop a solid technique in one or more media of their choice. These
courses are held in our art studios, located in the lower level of the
Dollard des Ormeaux Cultural Center. Please note that the GST (5%) and
the PST (7.5%) are added to fees for students 15 years and older. All
prices indicated for adult courses include the taxes. |

8 weeks from April 12 to June 7 Monday from 7 to 10 p.m. Painting experience required Teacher: Joseph Blair
Dunlap
This class is open to painters of all mediums who
are confident in the use of their painting materials and interested in
developing a comprehensive
understanding of portraiture. We will paint from plaster casts and skull
replicas in
order to establish an appreciation of the underlying bone structure and
then move on to life paintng, spending
several weeks on selfportraits. Using the knowledge
acquired, we will then paint
directly from a model in 3

(LEVEL ONE) Thursday (April
8) 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m. or Learning to draw what one sees is the first step for any serious artist. This course will introduce the student to various drawing and rendering techniques through the exploration of different subjects such as objects, still life, portraiture and the figure with strong emphasis being put on an understanding of light and shadow. 2 classes involve the model. Not included: materials

8 weeks from April 12 to June 7 This
class is ideal for people who like the idea of freely combining
materials to create a work of art. Through the use of photos, text,
fabric, pieces of their own drawings and paintings and other collected
and found materials in the creation of a new work of art, the student
will learn how to further develop the work through the use of drawing,
painting and pastel materials and such things as composition and
layering techniques while exploring this new form of creative
expression. |
8 weeks from April 7 to May 26 Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12
p.m. This course will introduce
you to the realm of oil painting through the exploration of methods,
techniques and materials. Students will be introduced to colour theory,
colour mixing, composition and painting style. Emphasis is Not included: materials (approx. $150)

In
this oil painting course the students will learn how to mix colours, to
compose images and to prepare sketches as preparation for finished
work. Subject matter for projects can include still lives, landscapes,
portraits and non representational work. Composition and colour
theory are also covered. If sufficient Level 2 students register a
separate course may be added. Not included: materials (approx. $250) |

6 to May 25 Painting

painters of all mediums who have mastered the use of their painting

METHODS AND MATERIALS OF This
course is about the physical properties of new acrylic paints and
explores the many techniques available for achieving a variety of
visual effects. Classes will cover preparing grounds, building
textures, using gels, glazing, colour mixing, collaging and varnishing.
The teacher will provide stencils. Students will be asked to bring in
images for collage and transfer. Students will only have to bring
their painting surfaces (i.e. paper, board, canvas, wood panel approx.
$50) All other materials (paints,
gels, varnishes etc.) for scheduled in-class work will be
provided. |
FUNDAMENTALS
OF ACRYLIC PAINTING 8 weeks from April
8 to May 27 This course is designed to
guide beginners who want to enhance their knowledge and their
understanding of the materials properties and techniques of acrylic
painting through demonstrations and group discussions. Students will be
encouraged to explore a variety of subject matter including still life,
portraiture and landscape through direct observation as well as from
imagination. Not included: materials

WATERCOLOUR AND MORE
Watercolors and watercolor pencil, watercolor
crayons and Conté will be explored using a variety of
traditional and non traditional techniques. Abstraction, still
life and landscape will be focused on, while working toward individual
style. |
OIL PAINTING -
IMPRESSIONISM 8 weeks from April 12 to June 7 Monday from 7 to 10 p.m.,
Studio 1 Using oil paints, you will
learn the painterly technique of the Impressionists. In this
class you will study how to create vibrant colour relationships by
mixing your colours side by side on the canvas using the wet on wet
method of painting as well as how to create a painting in successive
layers of paint. Working from observation you will learn how to
understand and paint the colour of light. Subject matter will

8 weeks from April 7 to May 26 This course is designed for everyone who wants to learn how to take a good photograph. You will be introduced to the art of photography while learning how to use your camera better. Students must have their own 35 mm or SLR digital camera with manual option and can either use black and white or colour film. (Not for automatic cameras). No darkroom work is involved. AESTHETICS IN ART (in
English)
8 weeks from April 12 to June 7 Through a series of talks and discussions you will learn how to interpret and understand contemporary art. Using a study of known works, this course is designed to lead you to reinterpret your photographs, memories, or emotions, and teach you how to conceptually make your art stronger.
